Kokua On December 19, 2003 the founders of Mo`olelo opened a bank account with $25 and a vision of telling powerful stories. Nancy Downen Wexler, too, believed in the vision and became the first member of the Mo`olelo Founders Circle by donating $5,000 in the memory of Bjorn Michael. Pamela M. Ratcliffe of Prudential Realty was touched by the vision as well, and contributed $5,000 to become a Founders Circle member. Other friends and family contributed amounts ranging from $10 to $1,000, and in six months there was $13,000 in the bank account, enough to pay for half of the budget for the inaugural show. The staff and board of Mo`olelo held their breath, crossed their fingers and produced their first play, remains, hoping that ticket sales and additional donations would come in to pay the bills. They did! Actors were paid livable wages. Audiences were inspired and transported by the play. And Mo`olelo could go on to tell another story. It all started with just $25. As is standard in the nonprofit theater industry, ticket sales cover roughly only 28% of our operating budget. Kokua is the Hawaiian word for help or cooperate. The Board of Trustees adopted an Investment Policy and appointed an Audit Committee that ensures due diligence, responsibility, and integrity in all of Mo`olelo's financial matters. |
