Summer 2003 Kim Palma took five students from the Orange County High School of the Arts to New York to intern backstage at The Joyce Theater. The Joyce is located in the Chelsea area of Manhattan, and is one of the most active and well-respected dance theaters in the city. Throughout the school year the students held several fundraisers to cover the $1100 cost of the trip. They also participated in workshops to hone their technical theater skills and learn the specificities of working at the Joyce. In addition, each student had to maintain passing grades in all their classes to be eligible to go. Once they were in New York, the students participated in the load-in, tech, and first week of performances for the dance company Pilobolus. Students worked alongside the staff and crew of the Joyce Theater and held their own with these professional New York stagehands. The trip was a huge success. |
