Recording Day!

One of the interesting things about the play HOW I GOT THAT STORY by Amlin Gray is that he has “The Historical Event” character make all the sound effects with his voice. Everything from music, to artillery, to planes and choppers, to office and street sounds.

We recorded the sounds today. Here are Sound Designer George Ye and Actor Greg Watanabe hard at work:

Saturday Feb 25 will feature a post-show talk with Sue Diaz, Award-Winning journalist and author of “Minefields of the Heart.” She did not support the U.S. government’s decision to go to war in Iraq in 2003. And yet her son, a Purple Heart Veteran, served in the Bravo Company platoon from the 101st Airborne’s 502nd Infantry Regiment, a unit known sinde World War II as the “Black Hearts Brigade.” This unit became the focus of considerable media attention following events that made headlines in the summer of 2006: an insurgent attack at a remote outpost on three of their own – one killed at the scene, the other two kidnapped, their bodies found days later; and a terrible war crime committed against an Iraqi family by four soldiers from the First Platoon. An advocate of writing as way of healing, Sue has conducted writing workshops for war veterans in the San Diego area since 2007, and has served as a consultant on Mo`olelo’s production of How I Got That Story.

Later, in another dangerous theater, he received the Purple Heart medal for wounds suffered during the attack on the Marine Barracks in Beirut, Lebanon, 1983. Co-Producers of How I Got That Story

In December 2011, the Mo`olelo Development Committee launched a new sponsorship package for our 2012 Season. Two fantastic couples, Ree & Maurice Miller and Beth & Norman Saks, stepped up to serve as the “Co-Producer Sponsors” of How I Got That Story each at the $5,000 level. Their leadership as pioneer sponsors of the inaugural production of our inaugural three-show season helped to ensure the quality and success of the production. We say Mahalo to them.

We also wish to thank and acknowledge our “Patron” Sponsors of this production:

Larry & Sydney Cousins
Jay & Julie Sarno

Advancing from producing two shows to three shows annually in 2012 means a significant increase in our production expenses. Are you interested in learning how you can make a difference on our stage and in our community through a production sponsorship? Please contact Executive Artistic Director Seema Sueko at seema@moolelo.net.

NAACP San Diego Branch Veterans Committee Day at the Theater

lessons on Vietnam

Today we staged the scene “in the field,” and asked Vietnam Veterans Ernie d’Leon, Don Armitage and Joe Ciokon to show us how they actually moved around in Vietnam. What was the terrain like? How did they exit a chopper? How did they patrol? what about during break time? What’s an ambush like? How do you low crawl? What does shrapnel from a granade feel like? Etc etc. They kindly allowed us to ask all our questions so that we could portray a sense of authenticity in this absurd-style play. Here are some photos from the day:
